Playground Press Homeschool Makeover Reveal
If you’ve ever wished your home learning space felt more organized, more inspiring, and honestly… more fun (without turning your house into a cluttered classroom), then you are going to LOVE these homeschool room ideas!
This past weekend, our Playground Press team traveled to Michigan to do something we’ve never done before! We granted our first ever homeschool makeover to a real homeschool family, right inside their home learning space!
In our sister company, Schoolgirl Style, we grant a few teachers a classroom makeover each year as part of our philanthropic efforts. It’s one of our favorite things we do because creating beautiful and more functional learning spaces changes lives!

And now, we’re SO excited to bring that same heart and magic to the homeschool side through Playground Press.
Today, we’re introducing you to the sweetest family ever, walking you through their homeschool makeover transformation, sharing the intentional zones we created, and of course linking everything so you can steal inspo for your own homeschool room ideas!
Meet the Williams Family
Say hello to the Williams family! They were truly AMAZING! So welcoming, so supportive, and just an all-around joy to spend the weekend with.

They have four children (three girls and one boy), and their learning routine is such a great example of what modern, flexible learning can look like! Their family does a mix of:
-
Full-time homeschool learning at home
-
Traditional school learning with at-home supplemental learning
Which meant this home learning space had to do it ALL.
✅ Functional for multiple ages
✅ Works for different grade levels
✅ Easy for learning independently AND together
✅ A space that can shift between academic time, creativity, and play
✅ And still feel calm and welcoming (not overwhelming)
Basically… the ultimate challenge. And we were so ready!
Our Focus: Designing a Space for Real Families & Real Routines
This makeover wasn’t about creating a “Pinterest-perfect” room that looks cute in photos but doesn’t work in real life.
Our goal was bigger than that.
We wanted to create a space that felt:
-
easy to use every day
-
flexible for changing schedules
-
organized without feeling strict
-
playful without being distracting
-
and supportive for independent learning
Here were our biggest priorities:
-
Give each child their own space (their own desk + bulletin board with their name)
-
Create a setup that invites screen-free learning
-
Add tons of room for displaying work
-
Build intentional zones for:
-
writing
-
creating
-
reading
-
dramatic play
Before and After
The most exciting part of this entire makeover was taking a space that felt like it needed a system, and turning it into a room that made learning feel exciting!

Before: the room didn’t have clear zones, the kids didn’t have their own individualized learning spots, and materials weren’t always easy for them to access independently.

After: everything had a place, every child had ownership in the space, and the room immediately felt calmer, brighter, and more functional!
The Zones We Created (And Why They Work!)
A huge part of this makeover was creating intentional learning zones, because when everything happens in the same spot, it can start to feel messy.
So instead, we designed a space that flows based on their how kids learn and use the space.
1) Kids Desks + Individual Workspaces

This was the foundation of the whole room.
What we designed:
-
Each child has their own desk + chair
-
Two sets of desks are facing each other (perfect for sibling learning)
-
Every child also got their own personal bulletin board
Why this zone works:
-
Individual workspaces: each child has their own seat + desk
-
Personal display space: each child has a bulletin board to showcase work
-
Independence built-in: supplies are within reach so kids can grab what they need confidently
And can we just say… seeing the kids light up over having their own desk was EVERYTHING!

2) The Reading Retreat (Carpet + Cozy Area)

Every learning space needs a soft spot. A place where learning doesn’t feel like “sit down and work,” but more like “come here and get inspired.”
What we designed:
-
cozy rug area
-
reading tent
-
bench + cushions + pillows
-
book organization that made their library accessible
Why it works:
-
Cozy flexible seating: comfy learning any way kids want
-
Book-friendly setup: books organized + reachable
-
Inspiring visuals: framed learning posters keep it educational while still warm and inviting
3) Dramatic Play Station

And of course we had to include a dramatic play area! Because play isn’t “extra,” it’s part of the learning!
Why we added it:
-
Designated play zone: keeps desk spaces focused + academic
-
Balances learning + fun: keeps the room playful and welcoming
-
Learning through pretend play: builds creativity, communication, problem-solving, and SEL skills, completely screen-free
This space was such a reminder that homeschool doesn’t have to feel rigid or overly structured. It can feel joyful, playful, and full of imagination!
4) Creation Station and Art Center

A designated spot for siblings to create together builds more than art skills, it builds connection!
What we included:
-
group workspace for projects
-
organized art supplies
-
display zones for student work
Why it works:
-
Designated creativity hub: perfect for siblings working side-by-side
-
Proud display areas: space to hang and showcase creations
-
Organized + stocked: everything is in reach with built-in organization
This zone turned “Where do I put this?” into “Let’s hang it up!” (Huge parent win.)

All of the crafts and resources are right from our January Curriculum Resources!
5) Start-the-Day Station

This zone is all about making your morning routine flow and make daily routines feel so much easier!
What we designed:
Why it works:
-
Morning meeting made easy: calendar, clock, weather + seasons
-
Grab-and-go setup: storage for daily materials
-
Visual learning everywhere: posters and visuals to support independence
This zone was built to help them start each day grounded, confident, and organized.
The Makeover Process (Furniture + Styling!)
One of our favorite parts about this makeover? It is truly easy to recreate for anyone looking for inspiration! We have our tips, tricks, amazon cart, and collection of all items we used ready to share!
We used pieces that are functional, flexible, and not overly complicated.

Furniture setup highlights:
-
IKEA furniture was surprisingly easy to assemble
-
Kallax shelves became the MVP of the room
-
Two sets of desks facing each other with swivel chairs
-
Eight-cube Kallax shelves alongside each desk
-
Four-cube Kallax shelves at the ends of desks
-
A mix of Kallax shelves created the reading nook by the window
Once the furniture was built… the designing began!
What Made the Setup So Easy (and So Good)

A few specific details made this room feel elevated without being overwhelming:
-
Printable letters + borders = easy decor that looks professional
-
Supply caddies kept materials organized and reachable
-
Peel-and-stick wallpaper added instant personality (and was easy to install!)
-
Clear bins of art supplies made things look cute and functional
-
Paper chains by the window gave the room nostalgic, kid-like joy
Not only are paper chains adorable, they can literally become a craft kids make for the room. So fun!
And overall?
The room felt calm, cheerful, and inviting, without being too “loud” visually.
Why This Homeschool Makeover Worked
This makeover wasn’t just cute, it was strategic!
Here’s why the space truly functions:
-
Kids can access materials on their own
-
Everything has a home (so cleanup is easier)
-
Zones keep learning structured without feeling strict
-
The layout is flexible and can grow with them over time
-
Every child feels ownership in the space
This was a learning room designed for real life.
The Sweetest Reactions

Everyone was SO excited the kids were smiling, pointing at everything, and basically saying “this is my favorite!” about everything!
But one moment really stayed with us was Kate, the middle child, saying over and over: “I’m so happy I have my own desk.”
That right there is exactly why we did this.
Sometimes the biggest transformation is giving a child a space that says:
“This is for you. You belong here. Your learning matters.”

Want to Recreate These Homeshool Room Ideas?
This makeover might look like something only a “team” could do… but the truth is:
Parents can recreate any versions of this SO easily!
Here’s the formula:
-
Give each child a desk (even small ones!)
-
Add a personal bulletin board and name letters
-
Build zones that work for your kids (reading / art / morning routine)
-
Put supplies at kid height for independence
-
Add a few educational visuals, playful decor, work displays

Simple changes = huge results.
We’re linking everything we used in this makeover and our amazon cart, so you can shop, grab inspo, and build a space that works for your own family!
